I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it. Voltair

Dear Sir or Madam:
Before we tell you about an unfortunate event that took place on April 6 of this year and involving the Russian community of Chicago, please let us give you some background facts concerning this event.

The most popular radio talk show for the Russian speaking community is the “PEOPLE’S WAVE”. The show is hosted by Sergey Zatsepin, 1240AM in Chicago area on weekdays from 2:00PM to 5:00PM.

He gives a courageous conservative analysis of the current situation in the United States. He offers a straight forward position on the continuing Israeli-Arab conflict. He honestly reports on current events in Russia, the Ukraine as well as other former Soviet Republics. His program has earned him the great respect and sincere appreciation from the majority of the Russian community in Chicago area..

There are some listeners who disagree with opinions, voiced in his program. They know only one way of dispute which is to shut up the opponent. The way too familiar to us, immigrants from the former Soviet Union, the dictatorial approach to the freedom of speech. They have called WSBC -1240 АМ where they have found a sympathetic ear with the station manager who believes in “Political Correctness”. It is interesting to note that the ownership of this station includes several other Chicago stations, one of which is known for the “Progressive Movement” and has been a generous contributor to the Democratic Party.

On April 6, 2009, the program hosted by S. Zatsepin was shut down from the air, without any prior notice, in violation of the contract with People’s Wave. Next day, though, one of the owners of WSBC -1240 АМ “allowed” People’s Wave to continue broadcasting at the usual 2-5PM time slot. There was no reason given for the previous interruption other than the station manager’s comment that the program on April 6 contained “criticism of the President Obama”.

Dear Sir or Madam, you can imagine what the freedom of speech means for us, immigrants from the former USSR. We were shaken and outraged by this incident. Will the program People’s Wave survive in the foreseen future? Is this symptomatic of the present situation in the country? We are forced to wonder if the control over the media that we left behind has followed us to the United States?
We would appreciate your attention to this incident; we think that you and your listeners should be aware of it.
